![]() The MGS and SCG guides were designed and
developed by Rick Christopherson (that's me). I own two
small businesses: RTS Engineering and Waterfront Woods,
but you probably know me best as the author of the Supplemental
Owner's Manuals that I write for Festool USA,
including the Festool
Domino Supplemental Manual.
I have been working with the Domino for over 6 years, which is several years before it was released to the public. In addition to my work as a Technical Writer of product manuals, I have also been a professional Cabinetmaker, Design Engineer and Consultant, and a Magazine Editor specializing in woodworking tools. As a woodworker, I had been thinking about the need for an accessory like the MGS and SCG guides since shortly after I got my first Domino, but I never considered developing it myself until recently. After reading about a woodworker struggling to complete a task using his Domino, I decided to give the problem a little more thought, and came up with the concepts for both the MGS and SCG guides. The MGS guide was developed first because the design was more straightforward. By the following morning of an all-night design session in SolidWorks (some might call that obsession), the rudimentary design concept was achieved. Final refinements and research took another couple weeks. These refinements were all focused around making the guide and stops more rigid and accurate. I knew from the very outset that if the stops were not rock-solid and 100% repeatable, the guide would be worthless for the woodworker. It was the trivial things that most wouldn't even notice that mattered most; like adding the backstop tab to the stops. The concept for the SCG guide was developed almost simultaneously, but refining the design would take several more months. The final design is elegant in its simplicity, but its roots were far more complex. Several designs were contemplated, but their complexity and cost would put the guide beyond the reach of any woodworker. The epiphany moment was the dovetail slide, and all of the other design complexities evaporated into the elegantly simple design achieved.
